Asleep at the stern

  Balzan Parish Church

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Hu kien fil-poppa, rieqed fuq imħadda” (Mk 4:38) Dan id-dettall fir-rakkont tal-Evanġelju skont San Mark illum, meta qed jitkellem fuq Ġesù mad-dixxipli tiegħu, baqa’ fil-moħħ u fil-qalb tal-ewwel Insara. Din il-ġrajja turi lil Ġesù mad-dixxipli tiegħu fuq id-dgħajsa, waqt li qed jaqsmu l-baħar tal-Galilija; imma turina wkoll li Ġesù kien f’post partikulari – fil-poppa, in-naħa ta’ wara tad-dgħajsa.

Din il-ġrajja d-dixxipli baqgħu jiftakruha għax dak inhar qamet tempesta, u diversi mid-dixxipli kienu midħla ta’ xi tfisser tempesta f’dak il-baħar… Read more »

God always sustains us – The Archbishop

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

“Il-Mulej għamel miegħi ħwejjeġ kbar.” Hekk għedna fis-salm responsorjali. Hi espressjoni sabiħa li sidtna Marija tgħid hi stess fl-Evanġelju skont San Luqa. U dan is-santwarju għażiż tal-Madonna ta’ Pinu, aħna u niċċelebraw proprju dak li għamel magħha l-Mulej, infakkru t-tlugħ tagħha fis-sema. Ix-xewqa tagħha li ngħidu tliet Ave Marijiet f’ġieħ il-tlett ijiem li għamlet fil-qabar qabel l-assunzjoni tagħha.

Imma rridu nagħrfu li fl-espressjoni tagħha hemm ukoll il-karattru ta’ Marija… Read more »

Pope at Angelus: Amid trials and ‘storms’, do I cling to Christ?

  St Peter's Square, the Vatican

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday!

Today the Gospel presents us with Jesus on the boat with the disciples, on Lake Tiberias. A strong storm arrives unexpectedly, and the boat is in danger of sinking. Jesus, who was asleep, wakes up, threatens the wind and everything becomes calm again (cf. Mk 4:35-41).

But really, He doesn’t wake up, they awaken Him! … Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 24th June

Birth of Saint John the Baptist – Solemnity
Readings of the day

First Reading: Isaiah 49:1-6
Psalm: 138:1-3,13-15
Second Reading: Acts 13:22-26

Gospel: Luke 1:57-66,80

Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, “No; he is to be called John.” They said to her, “None of your relatives has this name.”

Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God.

Fear came over all their neighbours, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, “What then will this child become?” For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel… Read more »

St John the Baptist: an example of humility – The Archbishop

Mass on the solemnity of the nativity of St John the Baptist

  St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

“Inroddlok ħajr, għax tal-għaġeb għamiltni!” (Salm 138:14). Din l-espressjoni sabiħa mis-Salm 138, toqgħod tassew tajjeb fuq il-fomm ta’ Ġwanni l-Battista, fil-jum li fih niċċelebraw it-twelid tiegħu. Is-Sinjal li ngħata lil omm Ġesù, fit-tħabbira tal-anġlu, kienet li omm Ġwanni, Eliżabetta, kienet tqila; hi li kienet sterili, u ma setax ikollha tfal. U l-anġlu jgħid lil Marija: “Ġa għandha sitt xhur dik li għaliha kienu jgħidu li ma jistax ikollha tfal” (Lk 1:37)… Read more »
