The Gospel of the day: 11th January

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 Samuerl 4:1-11
Psalm: 43 (44):10-11,14-15,24-25

Gospel: Mark 1:40-45

In those days, a leper came to Jesus begging him, and kneeling he said to him, “If you choose, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. After sternly warning him he sent him away at once, saying to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter… Read more »

The awe of our lives – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Ġej warajja min hu aqwa minni” (Ġw 1:7). Dan hu li jgħid illum, fl-Evanġelju skont San Mark, San Ġwann Battista meta qed iħabbar li ġej Ġesù. U dejjem fuq hekk jinsisti San Ġwann Battista: li hu qiegħed hemm biex jipprepara lin-nies għal Ġesù. Għalhekk, meta Ġesù ġie biex jitgħammed, kienet stramba għal ħafna min-nies, ibda minn Ġwanni l-Battista stess li, f’siltiet fl-Evanġelji oħra – għax il-Magħmudija tal-Mulej hi rrakkuntata fl-Evanġelju ta’ San Mark, San Mattew, San Luqa – f’dawn is-siltiet hemm ir-reazzjoni ta’ Ġwanni l-Battista li jgħidlu: int gejt biex titgħammed? … Read more »

First Reading: 1 Samuel 1:9-20
Psalm: 1 Samuel 2:1,4-5,6-7,8abcd

Gospel: Mark 1:21b-28

In those days, when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue at Capernaum and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? … Read more »

Pope at Angelus – Do you remember the date of your baptism?

  Saint Peter's Square, The Vatican

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno!

Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord (cf. Mk 1.7-11). It occurs at the river Jordan, where John – for this reason known as the “Baptist” – performs a rite of purification, which expresses the commitment to renounce sin and to convert. The people go to be baptized humbly, sincerely, and as the Liturgy says, “barefoot and bare of soul”, and Jesus goes there too, inaugurating His ministry: He thus shows that He wants to be close to the sinners, to come for them, for us, for all of sinners! … Read more »

Meeting face-to-face relieves a lot of pain – The Archbishop to married couples

Mass for couples married in 2023

  St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Wieħed mill-aspetti kommoventi ta’ din il-festa hu l-misteru kbir tal-imħabba ta’ Alla, li ħerqana li tinfirex mat-trufijiet tal-art, u tlaqqa’ mal-ħniena ta’ Alla lill-ġnus kollha. Illum nistgħu ngħidu li qed niċċelebraw l-inklussività, u l-universalità tal-imħabba u tal-ħniena ta’ Alla. Din it-tarbija ċkejkna li twieldet fil-belt ta’ David, mhijiex biss imwielda għall-poplu Lhudi, imma hi wkoll ta’ salvazzjoni għall-ġnus. Ta’ 40 jum, Ġesù jkun f’dirgħajn Xmun fit-Tempju ta’ Ġerusalemm, u li dan “ir-raġel ġust u tajjeb, li kien jistenna l-faraġ ta’ Iżrael” (Lq 2:25), u jara l-Messija tal-Mulej, imdawwal mill-Mulej stess, iħares lejn din it-tarbija, u jirringrazzja lil Alla li qed jaraha b’għajnejh, qed jaraha wiċċ imb wiċċ, u jgħid, din hi “dawl biex idawwal il-ġnus, u glorja tal-poplu ta’ Iżrael” (Lq 2:32)… Read more »
