Readings of the day

First Reading: Numbers 11:4b-15
Psalm: 80 (81):12-13,14-15,16-17

Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21

Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.”

Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass… Read more »

They got lost in the riches – Bishop Galea-Curmi

  Il-Kappella tal-Madonna ta' Manresa fil-Kurja tal-Arċisqof, il-Furjana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Tfixklu minħabba fih”(Mt 13:57) . Dan hu li naqraw fl-Evanġelju llum skont San Mattew, dwar in-nies li semgħu lil Ġesù fis-sinagoga. Mal-ewwel tolqotna dil-kelma, għax kif tista’ titfixkel minħabba Ġesù?

Li kieku Ġesù kien qed jitkellem u jgħidilhom xi tagħlim li kien kontra dak li kienu jemmnu, tifhem li jitfixklu. Kieku Ġesù kien qed jitkellem b’lingwa li ma jifhmuhiex, jew xi ħaġa astratta, tifhem li jitfixklu… Read more »

The Sunday Gospel: 6th August

Transfiguration of the Lord – Feast
Readings of the day

First Reading: Daniel 7:9-10,13-14
Psalm: 96:1-2,5-6,9
Second Reading: 2 Peter 1:16-19

Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”  Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 5th August

Readings of the day

First Reading: Leviticus 25:1,8-17
Psalm: 66 (67):2-3,5,7-8

Gospel: Matthew 14:1-12

At that time Herod the ruler heard reports about Jesus; and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and for this reason these powers are at work in him.”

For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because John had been telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” Though Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded him as a prophet.

But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company, and she pleased Herod so much that he promised on oath to grant her whatever she might ask. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”

The king was grieved, yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he commanded it to be given; he sent and had John beheaded in the prison. The head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who brought it to her mother. His disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went and told Jesus.  Read more »

Restored letter of St Ignatius Loyola presented to Mdina Cathedral Museum

The Archive Conservation Laboratory of the Archdiocese of Malta presented the Cathedral Museum in Mdina with a meticulously restored letter attributed to St Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. Dating back to the years 1548-1549, the letter is tied to the establishment of the Jesuits’ college and university in Messina.

The Jesuits in Malta received this invaluable letter, along with other documents that seek to document the transmission of this letter, from their counterparts in the Sicilian province, reverently placing them within a sealed reliquary at the very heart of the church of their Collegium Melitense in Valletta… Read more »
