The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Hu tassew rakkont sabiħ dan tal-mifluġ li kien merfugħ minn erbgħa min-nies biex jeħduh sa quddiem Ġesù. Niżżluh minn toqba fis-saqaf biex Ġesù jfejqu. Ħa nħarsu ftit lejn dan ir-rakkont u naraw dawk li ħadu sehem attiv f’din il-ġrajja u dak li jgħallmuna.

L-ewwel nett, dawn l-erbgħa min-nies kellhom biċċa xogħol. Kellhom iġorru lill-mifluġ fuq il-friex u jeħduh sa quddiem Ġesù… Read more »

Psalm: 20 (21), 2-3.4-5.6-7

Gospel: Mk 2, 13-17

In those days, Jesus went out again beside the sea; the whole crowd gathered around him, and he taught them. As he was walking along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. And as he sat at dinner in Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were also sitting with Jesus and his disciples—for there were many who followed him.

When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”  Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 14th January

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 Sam 8, 4-7.10-22a
Psalm: 88 (89), 16-17.18-19

Gospel: Mk 2, 1-12

Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, It was reported that he was at home and many gathered around so that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. Then some people came, bringing to him a paralysed man, carried by four of them. And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this fellow speak in this way? … Read more »

Pope at Audience: Work is essential for our growth in holiness

Dear brothers and sisters, good morning!

The evangelists Matthew and Mark refer to Joseph as a “carpenter” or “joiner.” We heard earlier that the people of Nazareth, hearing Jesus speak, asked themselves: “Is not this the carpenter’s son?” (13:55; cf. Mk 6:3). Jesus practised his father’s trade.

The Greek term tekton, used to specify Joseph’s work, has been translated in various ways… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 13th January

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 Sam 4, 1-11
Psalm: 43 (44), 10-11.14-15.24-25

Gospel: Mk 1, 40-45

In those days, a leper came to Jesus begging him, and kneeling he said to him, “If you choose, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. After sternly warning him he sent him away at once, saying to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter… Read more »
