Pope recovering normally, shows closeness to hospitalised children

Pope Francis is recovering well after intestinal surgery he underwent on Sunday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, Matteo Bruni, the director of the Holy See Press office, said in his update on the Pope on Thursday.  It was a “quiet day for the Pope” and his chest-abdomen CT scan was negative

“His Holiness Pope Francis spent a quiet day, eating and moving around independently on his own,” Bruni said.  “In the afternoon he wanted to show his paternal closeness to the little patients of the nearby Pediatric Oncology and Child Neurosurgery ward, sending them his affectionate greeting.”

However, Bruni said that the Pope had a slight fever Wednesday evening.  Thursday morning, the Holy Father  “underwent routine microbiological tests and a chest-abdomen CT scan, which was negative”… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 8th July

Readings of the day

First Reading: Gen 44, 18-21.23b-29; 45, 1-5
Psalm: 104 (105), 16-17.18-19.20-21

Gospel: Mt 10, 7-15

In those days, Jesus told his apostles, “As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food.

Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town.

Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgement than for that town.  Read more »

Maltese people more open to online worship since the outbreak of the pandemic – but they still missed going to Church, study finds

Faith in God helped Maltese people go through the pandemic experience

A study conducted by the University of Malta’s Faculty of Theology found that more Maltese people are open to online methods of worship since the pandemic broke in 2020, but they still believe that public worship together is important. They missed going to Church, especially receiving the Eucharist. The majority of participants stated that their faith helped them go through the pandemic experience.

The survey, which was spearheaded by members of the Department of Pastoral Theology, Liturgy and Canon Law, set out to understand some of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the life, faith and meaning of the people living in Malta… Read more »

True love does not stifle – The Archbishop

Mass on the memorial of Saint Maria Goretti

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Is-silta mill-kapitlu 9 ta’ San Mattew hija maqsuma f’żewġ partijiet. L-ewwel waħda hija proprju dwar miraklu straordinarju meta Ġesù jiltaqa’ mar-raġel mbikkem li kien maħkum mix-xitan. “Ġesù keċċa x-xitan, u l-imbikkem qabad jitkellem” (Mt 9:33). Min jaf kemm-il darba aħna jkollna diffikultajiet ta’ komunikazzjoni bejnietna. Mhux għax inkunu imbikkmin fiżikament imma għaliex nirriffjutaw li niddjalogaw ma’ xulxin. Illum nitolbu lil Ġesù jeħlisna minn dawn il-ħitan li ntellgħu għal xulxin; hu li ħeles lill-imbikkem mill-ħakma tax-xitan u tah il-kelma mill-ġdid jagħmel ukoll hekk f’tant sitwazzjonijiet fil-familji, fis-soċjetà… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 6th July

Readings of the day

First Reading: Gen 32, 22-32
Psalm: 16 (17), 1.2-3.6-7.8b & 15

Gospel: Mt 9, 32-38

In those days, a demoniac who was mute was brought to Jesus. And when the demon had been cast out, the one who had been mute spoke; and the crowds were amazed and said, “Never has anything like this been seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.”

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.”
