The Gospel of the day: 16th November

Readings of the day

First Reading: 2 Mac 6, 18-31
Psalm: 3, 2-3.4-5.6-7

Gospel: Lk 19, 1-10

In those days, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way.

When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.”

Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

Being sensitive with marginalized people – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Hi talba tassew sabiħa dik li għamel dan l-għama: “Ġesù, bin David, ikollok ħniena minni!” Dan kien “mal-ġenb tat-triq jittallab il-karità”. Din it-talba għamilha mhux darba, imma aktar minn darba: “Ġesù, Bin David, ikollok ħniena minni!” Ħa nħarsu ftit lejn din il-ġrajja, u naraw x’tgħallimna għal ħajjitna.

L-ewwel, ħa nharsu lejn il-bniedem għama. L-Evanġelju jgħid li dan kien mal-ġenb tat-triq jittallab il-karità… Read more »

Pope at Angelus encourages active citizenship for the care of the common home

  The Vatican

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno!

The Gospel passage of today’s liturgy opens with a phrase of Jesus that leaves us astonished: “The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven” (Mk 13:24-25). But what now, even the Lord was a doomsdayer? No, this is certainly not His intention… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 15th November

Reading of the day

First Reading: 1 Mac 1, 10-15.41-43.54-57.62-64
Psalm: 118 (119), 53.61.134.150.155.158

Gospel: Lk 18, 35-43

As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard a crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

Then he shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who were in front sternly ordered him to be quiet; but he shouted even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Jesus stood still and ordered the man to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me see again.” Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has saved you.”

The end should not frighten us – Bishop Galea-Curmi

Mass on the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Ħal Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Meta se jseħħ l-aħħar tad-dinja? Din hi diskussjoni li kultant żmien tqum, u nafu li kull darba li ħabbru li d-dinja se tispiċċa f’xi sena partikulari, dan ma seħħx. Meta nisimgħu dal-kliem ta’ Ġesù fl-Evanġelju, għall-bidu taħsbu li qed jitkellem fuq dan, qisu biex jagħti ħjiel. Imma mbagħad jgħid sentenza ċara: ħadd ma jaf meta, “ħadd ħlief il-Missier”. Ma jaqtgħalniex il-kurżità! … Read more »

“It is not only war that is an instrument of death” – The Archbishop

Mass on Remembrance Day

  St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

“Is-sema u l-art jgħaddu, imma kliemi ma jgħaddix” (Mk 13:31). Is-silta li għadna kemm smajna mill-Evanġelju ta’ San Mark f’kapitlu 13 hija silta fejn l-evanġelista jagħtina ħjiel ta’ diskors intimu ta’ Ġesù ma’ erbgħa mid-dixxipli tiegħu: Pietru, Ġakbu, Gwanni u Indrì. Għax il-kapitlu 13 jibda billi jgħidilna li ħa lil dawn l-erbgħa biss fuq l-Għolja taż-Żebbuġ li tħares lejn Ġerusalemm, qagħad bilqiegħda — bħalma jagħmel kull għalliem — u fetaħ qalbu magħhom… Read more »

The Sunday Gospel: 14th November

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings of the day

First Reading: Dan 12:1-3
Psalm: 15(16):5,8,9-10,11
Second Reading: Hebrews 10:11-14,18

Gospel: Mk 13:24-32

In those days, Jesus told his disciples: “But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see “the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. “But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father”.  Read more »
