Refugees who suffer because of ‘man’s inhumanity to man’ – The Archbishop

Message for the book launch ‘Dying to Live – Stories from Refugees on the Road to Freedom’

  The Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

Message by Archbishop Charles Scicluna

Thank you for this extraordinary experience of listening to you Danielle [Vella] and you Daniel [Jude Okoeguale] for sharing your experiences. After reading pages of the book I found it gripping but also very moving. And I find that we need to share these narratives, because we need to make statistics alive. And thank you very much Daniel for your witness because you are not a number, you are a brother… Read more »

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Hemm diversi nies li jisseparaw, jagħmlu firda bejn min hu twajjeb u min iħaddem moħħu. Fil-fatt, tismagħha din, fuq xi ħadd: “Dak veru twajjeb, m’għandux ħażen”, imbagħad wara ftit “jagħmlu li jridu bih!” U fuq ħaddieħor; “Dak ħażin, moħħu jilħaqlu, ma jidħkux bih!”

Qisha hemm firda bejn il-wieħed u l-ieħor, ma tistax tkun il-wieħed u l-ieħor f’daqqa. Fil-fatt, diversi nies jgħidu li kważi aħjar ma tkunx twajjeb, ħalli n-nies ma jagħmlux li jridu bik… Read more »

Pope recovering normally; Sunday ‘Angelus’ from hospital

Pope Francis “spent a quiet day”, Thursday, with “normal clinical progress”. “He continued to eat regularly and continued his scheduled treatment,” Matteo Bruni, the director of the Holy See Press Office, said in a brief statement on Friday.

The Holy Father is recovering normally after a scheduled surgery for “diverticular stenosis of the colon” on Sunday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

In his update on the Pope’s convalescence, Bruni said he “walked in the corridor and resumed his work, alternating it with moments of reading texts”.  Thursday afternoon, “he celebrated Holy Mass in the chapel of his private apartment” in the hospital, “attended by all those assisting him during his hospitalization”… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 10th July

Readings of the day

First Reading: Gen 49, 29-33; 50, 15-26a
Psalm: 104 (105), 1-2.3-4.6-7

Gospel: Mt 10, 24-33

In those days, Jesus told his apostles: “A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!

“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops.

Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? … Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 9th July

Readings of the day

First Reading: Gen 46, 1-7. 28-30
Psalm: 36 (37), 3-4.18-19.27-28.39-40

Gospel: Mt 10, 16-23

In those days, Jesus told his apostles: “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all because of my name… Read more »

Pope recovering normally, shows closeness to hospitalised children

Pope Francis is recovering well after intestinal surgery he underwent on Sunday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, Matteo Bruni, the director of the Holy See Press office, said in his update on the Pope on Thursday.  It was a “quiet day for the Pope” and his chest-abdomen CT scan was negative

“His Holiness Pope Francis spent a quiet day, eating and moving around independently on his own,” Bruni said.  “In the afternoon he wanted to show his paternal closeness to the little patients of the nearby Pediatric Oncology and Child Neurosurgery ward, sending them his affectionate greeting.”

However, Bruni said that the Pope had a slight fever Wednesday evening.  Thursday morning, the Holy Father  “underwent routine microbiological tests and a chest-abdomen CT scan, which was negative”… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 8th July

Readings of the day

First Reading: Gen 44, 18-21.23b-29; 45, 1-5
Psalm: 104 (105), 16-17.18-19.20-21

Gospel: Mt 10, 7-15

In those days, Jesus told his apostles, “As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food.

Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town.

Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgement than for that town.  Read more »
