Maltese people more open to online worship since the outbreak of the pandemic – but they still missed going to Church, study finds

Faith in God helped Maltese people go through the pandemic experience

A study conducted by the University of Malta’s Faculty of Theology found that more Maltese people are open to online methods of worship since the pandemic broke in 2020, but they still believe that public worship together is important. They missed going to Church, especially receiving the Eucharist. The majority of participants stated that their faith helped them go through the pandemic experience.

The survey, which was spearheaded by members of the Department of Pastoral Theology, Liturgy and Canon Law, set out to understand some of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the life, faith and meaning of the people living in Malta… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 7th July

Readings of the day

First Reading: Gen 41, 55-57; 42, 5-7a. 17-24a
Psalm: 32 (33), 2-3.10-11.18-19

Gospel: Mt 10, 1-7

In those days, Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.’  Read more »

True love does not stifle – The Archbishop

Mass on the memorial of Saint Maria Goretti

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Is-silta mill-kapitlu 9 ta’ San Mattew hija maqsuma f’żewġ partijiet. L-ewwel waħda hija proprju dwar miraklu straordinarju meta Ġesù jiltaqa’ mar-raġel mbikkem li kien maħkum mix-xitan. “Ġesù keċċa x-xitan, u l-imbikkem qabad jitkellem” (Mt 9:33). Min jaf kemm-il darba aħna jkollna diffikultajiet ta’ komunikazzjoni bejnietna. Mhux għax inkunu imbikkmin fiżikament imma għaliex nirriffjutaw li niddjalogaw ma’ xulxin. Illum nitolbu lil Ġesù jeħlisna minn dawn il-ħitan li ntellgħu għal xulxin; hu li ħeles lill-imbikkem mill-ħakma tax-xitan u tah il-kelma mill-ġdid jagħmel ukoll hekk f’tant sitwazzjonijiet fil-familji, fis-soċjetà… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 6th July

Readings of the day

First Reading: Gen 32, 22-32
Psalm: 16 (17), 1.2-3.6-7.8b & 15

Gospel: Mt 9, 32-38

In those days, a demoniac who was mute was brought to Jesus. And when the demon had been cast out, the one who had been mute spoke; and the crowds were amazed and said, “Never has anything like this been seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.”

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.”

Proximity, compassion and tenderness – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Hemm tliet kelmiet li l-Papa Franġisku juża diversi drabi, u speċjalment użahom f’dawn l-aħħar xhur, biex ifisser l-istil ta’ Alla. Jgħid – dawn huma l-kelmiet tiegħu – viċinanza, kompassjoni, u tenerezza. Dawn narawhom ħafna fil-ħajja ta’ Ġesù, u f’dan ir-rakkont li smajna mill-Evanġelju skont San Mattew, narawhom jispikkaw b’mod sabiħ.

L-ewwel nett: viċinanza, jiġifieri li Alla hu qrib il-bniedem… Read more »

Rid us from our stubborn head – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Ħal Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

L-ilment li smajna llum fl-Ewwel Qari fil-Ktieb tal-Profeta Eżekjel dwar nies “rashom iebsa” hu lment li nistgħu nifhmuh. Għax min hu rasu iebsa – aħna ngħidu bil-Malti, b’espressjoni li tassew nifhmuha, “ras taż-żonqor” – diffiċli tipperswadih, diffiċli li jaċċetta dak li hu ovvju kultant. Ikun tant stinat li tiegħu biss tajjeb.

Niesu ma laqgħuhx

Fil-Kelma ta’ Alla llum, għandna mhux biss f’dan l-Ewwel Qari n-nies rashom iebsa, imma fl-Evanġelju Ġesù jiltaqa’ ma’ nies fl-istess pajjiż minn fejn kien hu, li wkoll kienu rashom iebsa… Read more »
