The number of Church marriages registered in the Archdiocese of Malta during the year 2012 was 1,562. This marks a marginal increase over the previous year (2011) which registered 1,520 marriages.

1,351 of the total number of marriages registered in 2012, were marriages between Maltese citizens. There were 74 marriages between Maltese and foreigners, as follows: 40 between Maltese Catholics and foreign Catholics; 21 between Maltese Catholics and foreign Christians; 13 between Maltese Catholics to non-Christians.  Seven marriages were registered between Maltese citizens living in a foreign country, and 130 marriages between foreign couples.

74 persons (41 men and 33 women) from 31 different countries were married to Maltese citizens in Church, as follows: from Italy (16), U.K. (9) and Russia (5). The most popular months for marriages were May, June and July. The most common ages of the couples married this year were between 20 and 29 years old.

In 2012, 56 marriages were convalidated.  A convalidated marriage is a civil marriage in which the spouses request to be married in the Church.

During the same period, there were 14 widows/widowers who re-married as well as 41 persons who re-married following a declaration of nullity of their previous marriage.
