As the Jubilee Year of Hope comes to an end, an encouraging announcement was revealed, as five young men were formally incorporated as full members of the Society of Christian Doctrine (MUSEUM) on Saturday evening, after successfully completing their candidacy.
Jake Bezzina from Naxxar, Joseph Mizzi from Għasri, David Abela from Siġġiewi, Wayne Borg from Swatar and Gilbert Borg from Żebbuġ (Malta) became incorporated members – commonly referred to by the Maltese term soċji – of the society established by St Ġorġ Preca in 1907.
Newsbook Malta spoke with two new members, Gilbert Borg and Jake Bezzina, who expressed their joy and gratitude for all that God has done for them.
They also expressed their excitement to see where this journey might take them as they deliver the Gospel, something that they could also potentially take them abroad.
How did they find their calling?
Gilbert recalled what St Ġorġ Preca used to say about this being a “true vocation”. Despite acknowledging that he did not frequent the MUSEUM before his Holy Confirmation, Gilbert said that he realised its importance later on.
He explained that he saw the true value of the soċji and said that they always showed humility.
On his part, Jake said that he was impacted by their teachings and their eagerness to share them with others.
During their interview, the love of sports and football within the society was discussed and it was eventually revealed that both Jake and Gilbert enjoy playing as goalkeepers.
“Not a lot of people know what the badge Verbum Dei Caro Factum Est signifies“
Gilbert remarked that he meets many young people who ask what the badge that the soċji wear signifies. The words Verbum Dei Caro Factum Est means “The Word became flesh”.
He said that he believes that there is a genuine interest and appreciation for what the MUSUEM has done for them during childhood.
During the interview, he also shared a message by St Ġorġ Preca that he holds in his heart: “those who love God cannot love him alone”, one which inspired him to share this same love.
Jake also said that he feels inspired by the soċji’s humility, while explaining the formation process they undergo.
What advice would they give those with a vocation?
Asked about the advice they would give to people feeling some kind of vocation, Jake encouraged them to attend more MUSEUM activities especially after their Holy Confirmation, while he also urged parents to take their kids to the MUSEUM regularly.
He said that in this way, children can begin understanding their vocation and the value of the Society from an early age.
Gilbert said that everyone has a vocation because “God calls to everyone because he loves everyone”. He added that frequenting MUSEUM will help you realise the importance of its values and will help you understand your vocation.
He concluded by inviting those who are feeling some kind of vocation to pray using a simple phrase “God show me what you want from me”.
