Three representatives of the Maltese church who work with young people and educators attended a conference organised by The Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) in Santiago de Compostela, Spain from the 19th to the 22nd of September 2024.
Themed ‘Strong Young People Rejoicing in Hope: Witnesses of Christ in Europe Today’ the event brought together members of the CCEE Youth Commission, young people, educators, university representatives, and those working in the field of vocations.
The Maltese delegation included Maria Emma Buhagiar, representing the youth, Silvana Cardona, representing Spiritual Development in Schools, and Benjamin Flores Martin, the Archbishop’s Delegate for Youth.
Cardinal Mario Grech was present during the conference and shared his vision for the upcoming Synod. Fr. Francesco Scalzotto from the Dicastery for Evangelisation outlined the Church’s plans for the Jubilee.
The conference served as a platform to reflect on the Church’s role in Europe, inspired by ‘Christus Vivit’, in anticipation of the upcoming Synod on Synodality and the Jubilee ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.
Youth participants from Europe shared their insights on various topics, including their experiences at World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon. They emphasised the profound impact of these events on their spiritual lives, igniting a desire to bring the same zeal back to their local parishes and communities.
The conference also provided a valuable opportunity for those involved in youth ministry and education to exchange best practices and discuss the future of the Church’s outreach to young people. CCEE contributors presented data and research, offering guidance on developing effective pastoral programs that respond to the needs of today’s youth.
Santiago de Compostela was chosen as the host city for this conference due to its deep spiritual significance as one of Europe’s most renowned pilgrimage destinations. This location symbolises our journey as a Church during the Jubilee and reflects our mission as pilgrims moving towards renewal.
