A seminar and a concert on Maltese contemporary music – Contemporary composers diffuse the voice of OrpheusThe events will be held in the Old Refectory, Archbishop Curia – Floriana.Hearing Orpheus Today is a musical event which consists of a seminar and a concert that will both be held on Saturday 9th May in the Old Refectory at the Archbishop’s Curia in Floriana. This will be a one-time opportunity for all participating composers to come together and discuss their views about contemporary theatre. The two-hour seminar will start at 9.30am. In the evening, at 8pm, a concert featuring chamber music will be held. Local and foreign musicians, who will be in Malta for this occasion, will perform during this concert, in a venue of great artistic quality. The general public is invited to attend.
The voice of Orpheus will be heard again nowadays thanks to contemporary composers. In fact, the voice of the god still continues to flow despite different languages used today. This will be the main topic discussed during the seminar on contemporary theatre, organized by Roberta A. Caruana and the Italian composer Federico Favali. The seminar will be held from 9.30am to 11.30am in the refectory hall. The speakers will talk about their ideas on contemporary theatre and their personal involvement in these events. The composers involved are Reuben Pace, Véronique Vella and Ruben Zahra, as well as Federico Favali and Roberta A. Caruana. The seminar is open to all musicologists and music students.
In the evening of the same day a chamber music concert is scheduled in the hall at 8pm. Maltese and foreign musicians, will play compositions by Charles Camilleri, Mariella Cassar-Cordina, Federico Favali, John Galea, Reuben Pace, Véronique Vella and Ruben Zahra. The instrumentation of the chamber works includes a combination of strings, woodwinds, percussions, voice and electronics. The admission is free.
“It has been a real challenge to organize this event. However, I look forward to both the seminar and the concert which will be an opportunity for Maltese people to become more familiar with and appreciate the Maltese music that is being written nowadays,” says Roberta A. Caruana. “It is very interesting to discuss contemporary theatre with other composers. The seminar will be an occasion to bring together people that are involved in the music scene, in the hope that their dialogue will develop new thoughts on the subject matter,” says Federico Favali. For more info: [email protected]
