G8

Money, politics and economics must serve, not rule. They must serve people and promote an ethics of truth. This was the thread running through Pope Francis Letter to the British Prime Minister on the eve of the G8 Summit. The Holy Father’s Letter was in response to one sent by David Cameron ahead of the Northern Ireland summit which gathers togther the leaders of the 8 most powerful nations in the world to the banks of Lough Erne.
In his letter, Pope Francis praises the priorities on the agenda of the British G8 Presidency: the free international market, taxation, and transparency on the part of governments and economic actors; concerted action to eliminate hunger and ensure food security and the protection of women and children from sexual violence in conflict situations.
Il-Papa Franġisku qal lill-pajjiżi tal-G8 li l-flus, il-politika u l-istudju ekonomiku għandhom iservu u mhux jaħkmu. Qal li għandhom iservu lin-nies u jippromwovu etika ta’ verita. Dan kien is-sentiment tas’ ittra li l-Papa kiteb lill-Prim Ministru Ingliż lejlet is-summit tal-G8. L-ittra kienet reazzjoni għal dik li bagħat David Cameron qabel is-summit tal-Irlanda ta’ Fuq li laqqa’ flimkien lill-mexxejja tal-iktar 8 pajjiżi b’saħħithom fid-dinja mal-banek ta’ Lough Erne.
Fl-ittra tiegħu, il-Papa faħħar il-prioritajiet fuq l-aġenda tal-Presidenza Ingliża tal-G8 li huma is-suq internazzjonali ħieles, it-tassazzjoni u t-trasparenza min-naħa tal-gvernijiet u l-atturi ekonomiċi, l-azzjoni konċentrata fuq l-eliminazzjoni tal-ġuħ u l-assigurazzjoni tas-sigurta tal-ikel, u l-protezzjoni tan-nisa u t-tfal mill-vjolenza sesswali f’sitwazzjonijiet ta’ kunflitt.
