Archbishop Paul Cremona O.P. has appointed Fr Joseph M. Farrugia as the new parish priest of Safi.
Fr Farrugia was born in Zabbar on 9th October, 1942. He received his education at De La Salle College, Cottonera. At age 16 he started his work experience as an “Emergency Teacher” at Zabbar primary school. In October 1961 he entered the Major Seminary from where he continued his tertiary education at the University of Malta.
Fr Joseph Farrugia was ordained priest on 22nd March, 1969. He started his pastoral work as assistant parish priest in Zabbar. In February 1973 he was appointed parish priest of Mqabba and three years later he was appointed parish priest of Kalkara. In 1990 Fr Farrugia was appointed parish priest of Birzebbuga where he served till 1999. During that year he was nominated Canon archpriest of St. Paul’s Church, Rabat. In 2003 he was nominated parish priest of St. Gregory, Sliema where he served for the last eight years.
During all these years Fr Joseph has been spiritual director of several religious and family groups.
The number of parishioners in Safi is around 2,200 gathered in 700 families.
