The Maltese Catholic Action (AKM) has launched an extensive maintenance and conservation project at its premises in Siġġiewi, supported through the Voluntary Organisations Project Scheme (VOPS) 2026.

The initiative aims to improve both the building’s external and internal infrastructure while preserving an important community space in the heart of Siġġiewi, near the parish church.

The building serves as a centre for educational and spiritual meetings organised by volunteers and members of the organisation. Over the years, however, it developed structural issues caused by exposure to the elements and rising damp affecting several walls. The planned works aim to prevent further deterioration of the stone structure and ensure that the premises remain safe and accessible for all those who use them.

The project will be carried out in two main phases. The first phase will focus on waterproofing works on the roof and upper walls, while the second phase will address walls in four different areas of the building that have been significantly affected by humidity.

AKM said the project is not only about preserving a building, but also about investing in the people who use the space. The works will help ensure that the organisation can continue to offer formation activities and community services in a safe and dignified environment, while safeguarding a property that has served the local community for generations.

The Maltese Catholic Action thanks the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) for the trust shown and the funding provided through the VOPS scheme, noting that a project of this scale would not have been possible without such financial support. The organisation also expressed appreciation to its members in Siġġiewi for their continued commitment and fundraising efforts to complement the grant received.

The Voluntary Organisations Project Scheme (VOPS) is administered by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector within the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector.
