Adam McCarthy, Lay Pastoral Assistant at the University of Malta Chaplaincy, has published a book ‘Insights in Service’ containing voluntary work experiences, paired with illustrations, and short reflections. The book is split into 30 sections and can be used as an easy, but profound way of reflection.
The stories shared in his book offer a glimpse into the lives of people from diverse backgrounds, revealing their struggles and the insights that can be drawn from the challenges of daily life along the way. Contemplating voluntary work experiences across Egypt, Lebanon, Ireland, Romania, and Malta provides a deeper, more authentic understanding of the world—beyond the boundaries of our communities and comfort zones.
McCarthy shares the reasons for writing this book: “Those who know me, know that I love voluntary work. I have gone on and led various experiences both in Malta and abroad. Last year when I was in Lebanon a few people asked me for write-ups that they could read to reflect on the moments they were experiencing during voluntary work. I wrote a few reflections but soon realised I couldn’t end there.”
The reflections cover various topics, such as fear, pride, love, and finding joy and vigilance, followed by questions that enable the reader to use their own experiences in life to reflect, pray and for their formation.
