Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi, together with other bishop delegates from the Episcopates of the European Union, will convene in Nemi (Italy) for the COMECE Spring Assembly. The event, scheduled to take place from 26 to 28 March 2025, will focus on renewing Europe’s internal unity and its commitment to being a global actor for peace. Among others, the Assembly will feature the participation of Cardinal Parolin, Archbishop Gallagher, and Presidents Mario Monti and Paolo Gentiloni.

In the context of the new EU institutional cycle and ongoing geopolitical turmoil, the bishops of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) will reflect on the many and varied challenges arising from today’s global unrest and instability.

On Wednesday, 26 March, the Assembly will receive H.E. Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin for an exchange on COMECE’s role in reinforcing the European project, rooted in the promotion of peace and fundamental human rights.

On Thursday, 27 March, the EU bishops will meet with Professor Mario Monti, former Prime Minister of Italy (2011–2013) and European Commissioner for the Single Market and Competition (1995–2004). Together, they will reflect on the economic and geopolitical challenges facing the present and future of the European Union.

In the afternoon of the same day, the bishops will join the many pilgrims who have arrived in Rome from around the world to participate in the Jubilee. On this occasion, they will pass through the Holy Door and celebrate Holy Mass in St Peter’s Basilica, together with H.E. Mgr Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States of the Holy See.

Following the Mass, the EU bishops will have the opportunity to engage in discussion with Mgr Paul Gallagher and H.E. Martin Selmayr, Ambassador of the European Union to the Holy See, on perspectives for a just and lasting peace in Europe and its neighbourhood.

On Friday, 28 March, the Assembly will welcome Paolo Gentiloni, former Prime Minister of Italy (2016–2018) and European Commissioner for the Economy (2019–2023). The dialogue will focus on the role of the EU in the world, with particular emphasis on economic competitiveness and European defence.

The COMECE Plenary Assembly is a closed-door event. Journalists and media professionals interested in interviewing bishops are strongly encouraged to contact the COMECE Press Office in advance.
