The International Council of Museums (ICOM) Malta, in collaboration with Heritage Malta, held a conference at the Malta Maritime Museum on the theme of ‘Small and Independent Museums’ on Friday 23rd May. The event showcased the important work being done by cultural professionals across the sector.

One panel focused on Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage Management, with representatives from several parish museums, including Paul Catania (Naxxar Parish Museum), Joseph Borg (Il-Ħaġar Museum in Gozo), Judith Valletta (Wignacourt Museum in Rabat), Perit Reuben Abela (Żejtun Parish Museum) and Maria Dobos Falzon from the Collections Management Unit at the Archdiocese of Malta.  The session was chaired by Dr Matthias Ebejer, Senior Collections Officer of the Archdiocese of Malta.

Amongst other themes, the panel discussed the financial sustainability of ecclesiastical museums, the advantages of location with regards to visitor flow, different types of visitor engagement, the collaboration with state entities and partnerships with private consortia.

The discussion was very well received, and such initiatives help strengthen the relationship that the Archdiocese of Malta has with various professional entities in the safeguarding and care of its cultural heritage.

The Collections Management Unit at the Archdiocese of Malta would like to   thank ICOM Malta for the opportunity to show the work and dedication of several employees and volunteers committed in the pastoral service of evangelisation through its museums.
