The Christian Churches of France called on President Nicolas Sarkozy to urge the world’s leaders who are to attend the UN meeting in Copenhagen “to open a new path for a humanity” in danger. “It is a pressing need, a great hope”. The text of the appeal – released today – is signed by the co-presidents of the Council of Christian Churches in France, namely Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, president of the French Bishops’ Conference, Pastor Claude Baty, president of the Federation of Protestant Churches, as well as Metropolitan Emmanuel on behalf of the Assembly of Orthodox Bishops of France.
“As representatives of the Christian Churches of France, we believe that our Earth is a gift from God. He entrusted it to us so that we could manage it with respect and justice for the good of everyone. The survival of Creation is at stake, but here and now, the world’s weakest peoples are the main victims of the injustice before our eyes are”. “We no longer need generous pledges, but concrete commitments. Our lifestyle needs to be changed if we want to make a more reasonable use of the world’s resources”.
“We hope that the conference in Copenhagen will take a considerable step forward in this direction”.
