On Monday 15th February 2010, at the Antoinette Room, Corinthia Palace Hotel, Balzan, the Pastoral Formation Institute in collaboration with the Secretariat for Social Communications held a seminar with the theme “Communicating in a Secular Society: New Opportunities for the Church”. The main speaker Dr Jim McDonnell is a speaker, writer, and adviser on many aspects of communications, broadcasting and media, an academic and member of a number of media associations in Europe and Great Britain. Following his half-hour presentation, Ms Miriam Dalli and Mr Nathaniel Attard each contributed a ten-minute reflection on the local scene. Afterwards some time was devoted towards discussing and sharing of views.
The event was open to the public. Professor Salvino Busuttil chaired the event. The seminar forms part of the ‘Dialogues in Society’ seminar series which has been an initiative of the Pastoral Formation Institute for the past three years. The main aims behind the Dialogues in Society are to offer an opportunity to explore how the faith experience can be developed to enliven diverse areas of life in the midst of contemporary challenges and opportunities. These Dialogues offer an occasion where situations which concern many of us can be discussed, and where the Church can listen to different professionals and recognize the needs that manifest themselves in different professional, economic and social spheres.
