PLENTY OF ROOM FOR EVERYONE

The earth has space for everyone, but the whole human family must commit to sharing resources, says Archbishop Agostino Marchetto.

The secretary of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers affirmed this Monday in Vicenza at a meeting organized by the diocesan foundation for migrants. The prelate reflected on immigration in the light of “Caritas in Veritate.”

In the encyclical, the Pope refers to the causes that impel millions of men and women to emigrate, such as lack of food, problems with water, agriculture, the environment, energy and the search for dignified work, noted the archbishop… Read more »

HOLY SEE OUTLINES DISARMAMENT ISSUES

The Holy See is outlining several achievements toward the goal of global disarmament, but is urging the United Nations to recognize some issues as well.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore, permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations, affirmed this today in an address to the first committee of the general assembly’s 64th session. He underlined the expectations of “those suffering and struggling because of armed conflicts and violence” who look to the United Nations for “tangible and convincing results in the hope of seeing a world free of nuclear weapons.”

The prelate affirmed the need for “strict controls over arms trade, which in our day is strongly embedded in illicit markets and causing serious damage to humanity.” He noted that last year, despite the “acute economic crisis,” military expenditures increased by 4% and totalled some $1.46 billion… Read more »

SPAIN’S BISHOPS URGE MASS PROTEST AGAINST ABORTION LEGISLATION

Spain’s Catholic bishops are urging church members to protest abortion legislation that would allow girls as young as 16 to terminate pregnancies without parental consent. “This law is a step backward, as far as defending the right to life of those who are to be born is concerned. It means a greater abandonment of pregnant mothers and irreparable damage to the common good,” the bishops’ Permanent Commission said in an Oct… Read more »

Don’t Exclude Church from Social Life – Pope

Benedict XVI is urging the European bishops to refrain from excluding the Church from social and cultural life, even while upholding its just distinction from the State.

The Pope affirmed this in a message sent to Cardinal Peter Erdo, president of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences and archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, Hungary.

The council held its plenary assembly in Paris last week, in which it focused on the theme “Church-State Relations 20 Years After the Fall of the Berlin Wall.”

The message, signed by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Pope’s secretary of state on the Pontiff’s behalf, affirmed that the Church is “faithful to her mission of truth in favor of a society to the measure of man, of his dignity and of his vocation.”

It added that this fidelity “is guarantee of an integral human development, remedy for the many imbalances that our world is suffering today.”

Therefore, the Church herself “desires that the life of men and peoples be inspired and animated by charity,” the Holy Father affirmed… Read more »
