The current U.S. debate over religious freedom should inspire Catholics in Europe to seek greater legal protection of their right to conscientious objection, according to a retired Vatican cardinal. Sudan and South Sudan border
Saying civilian lives are at risk, Catholic leaders appealed to the international community to step up efforts to prevent full-scale war from erupting over disputed territory along the tenuous Sudan-South Sudan border.
Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Adwok Kur of Khartoum, Sudan, said in an email to Catholic News Service that tensions between Sudan and South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, could be defused if the United Nations and the African Union would mediate the differences and attempt to determine the proper border between the two countries… Read more »

Sacred Scripture
The annual plenary session of the Pontifical Biblical Commission began Monday and will run through Friday at the “Domus Sanctae Marthae” inside Vatican City under the presidency of Cardinal William Joseph Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Jesuit Father Klemens Stock, secretary general of the commission, is chairing the session. The participants will continue their reflections on the theme of “Inspiration and Truth in the Bible.”

The Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity is just one of the many people congratulating Pope Benedict XVI on his 85th birthday. Bishop Brian Farrell said his Council “is very much impressed and close to the Holy Father in these days as he celebrates these important moments in his life.”
In thanking the Pope for his pastoral leadership in the search for unity among all Christians around the world, Bishop Farrell said he hoped the upcoming Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, Ireland this June “will be a moment of deep reflection on the process through which the Church in Ireland and in many other countries of the world is passing as it seeks to bring new answers to the difficulties that arise and the situations that make it hard for people today to give time and input to the spiritual element of their lives.”
