The Commission of the Bishops’ Conference of the EU (COMECE) and the Conference of European Churches (CEC) welcome the inter-institutional proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights signed yesterday at the Social Summit for Fair Jobs and Growth that is taking place in Gothenburg, Sweden.

COMECE and CEC consider the European Pillar of Social Rights as a vital and further step towards the European Social Market Economy, therefore we welcome the high-level consensus set by the joint proclamation of the Parliament, the Council and the Commission…

Pope Francis has sent a letter to participants in the COP-23 UN Convention on climate change, taking place in Bonn, Germany on 6-17 November.

The letter was sent to Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama of the Fiji Islands, which is officially hosting the event, and was read out to COP-23 participants.

Pope Francis congratulated the world leaders present at the COP-23 event and invited them “to maintain a high level of cooperation”…

At the end of this year, the Netherlands, the first country that legalized euthanasia, will have applied it on more than 7,000 patients, an increase of 67 percent compared to five years ago.

Euthanasia is fully legal in five countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, Luxembourg and Canada. However, more people are speaking about it. According to Carlo Casalone from the Pontifical Academy for Life, it’s because more cases are becoming public due to medical advancements and the diffusion of mass media…

Pope Francis was presented with the keys to a brand-new Lamborghini Huracan on Wednesday by officials from the luxury car maker. 

The special edition car, however, will be auctioned off by Sotheby’s in London and the proceeds given to four charities in Pope Francis’ name.

Last month thieves in France robbed, and in the process desecrated, ten churches in the Diocese of Annecy, in the country’s Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region. A similar incident also occurred in the Diocese of Vannes, in Brittany.

Local press reported that the churches in the Annecy diocese were broken into October 28 and 29.  The perpetrators  are believed to be two men who forced open the church doors with a crow bar…

Pope Francis sent messages of condolence to people in Iran and Iraq after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake killed more than 400 people, mostly in Iran.

The pope “assures all affected by this tragedy of his prayerful solidarity,” said the nearly identical messages, released today (13 November). 

“In expressing his sorrow to all who mourn the loss of their loved ones, he offers his prayers for the deceased and commends them to the mercy of the almighty,” said the telegrams, signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican secretary of state…
