The 400th anniversary of the Madonna ta’ Pinu painting is being commemorated by the Gozo Diocese with a Marian year which ends on the eve of the Santa Maria feast. A public lecture on the encounter between Islam and Christianity from the 7th to the 9th centuries is being held today at 6:30pm at the Archbishop’s Curia in Floriana.
The lecture will be delivered in Maltese by Rev. Dr Joseph Ellul OP, an expert on Islamic studies. The lecture is organised by the Malta Patristics Society and the Foundation for Theological Studies.

38-year-old father Cecilio Perez was reportedly shot dead by a presumed gang member while he slept on Saturday night in his parish in El Salvador.
Father Perez was the parish priest of San José la Majada, in Sosonate Diocese near the Guatemala border.
His body, with three bullet wounds, was found in his room by a group of faithful who had agreed to meet him at 5 am for morning prayers…
