The joy of the Church is to evangelise

Message by Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi

“This is the joy of the Church: to evangelise”. This was a constant refrain in the words of Pope Francis in Malta, particularly in his homily in Gozo, in front of the Ta’ Pinu Shrine. Some may have missed the play on the word “joy”, which in Spanish, the Pope’s native language, is “gozo”.

Pope Francis emphasised that we are called to return to the origins, in order to renew our faith and common mission… Read more »

Il-Mulej jeħlisni minn kull deni u jħarisni sa ma nasal fis-saltna tiegħu tas-sema” (2 Tim 4:17-18). “What does God expect of us?” – Asks the Archbishop

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

Permezz tas-silta li qrajna llum mill-Evanġelju, inħoss li Ġesù jgħallimna lezzjoni għażiża. Ħafna drabi nkunu għaddejjin mill-maltemp, kemm bħala Knisja, kemm bħala soċjetà, u kemm bħala individwi. Maltemp li jħabbatna personalment u individwalment. Lill-Mulej ngħidulu: “Salvana! Se nintilfu!” (Mt 8:25). Inħossuh li hu rieqed, la jisma’, la jara. Il-Mulej illum jgħidilna din il-kelma li ta’ min ngħożżuha. “Dan il-biża’ kollu għalfejn, ja nies ta’ fidi ċkejkna?” (Mt 8:26)… Read more »

No one and nothing before the Lord – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Xi kultant, fl-Evanġelju, naraw lil Ġesù qisu jġib ruħu ta’ bniedem diffiċli; ma jogħġbu xejn, jew fi tweġibiet tiegħu qisu diffiċli. U s-silta li qrajna llum, mill-Evanġelju skont San Mattew, għall-bidu tagħtina din l-impressjoni. Hawnhekk hawn tnejn min-nies li jitkellmu ma’ Ġesù, u tajjeb naraw u nifhmu x’qed jgħid Ġesù bit-tweġibiet tiegħu.

L-ewwel wieħed, li kien wieħed mill-kittieba, qallu: “Mgħallem, tmur fejn tmur, jien niġi warajk” (Mt 8:19)… Read more »

Rejection, commitment and perseverance – Bishop Galea-Curmi

Mass on the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Ħal Balzan

Hemm tliet kelmiet li jiġbru din il-ġrajja li smajna llum fl-Evanġelju skont San Luqa, fejn lil Ġesù nsibuh b’rieda sħiħa miexi lejn Ġerusalemm. Huma kelmiet li huma ta’ għajnuna għalina li rridu nkunu dixxipli ta’ Ġesù, u nimxu warajh.

Hemmhekk ma laqgħuhx

L-ewwel nett il-kelma ‘rifjut’. Naqraw fl-Evanġelju l-kliem “Hemmhekk ma laqgħuhx”. Dan hu x’ġaralu Ġesù meta hu u sejjer lejn Ġerusalemm, ried jgħaddi f’raħal tas-Samarija… Read more »

The Lord comes with the power of his mercy – The Archbishop

Mass on the feast of the birth of St John Baptist

  St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Huma diversi l-mumenti meta fit-talb tal-Knisja nsibu lil Ġwanni, it-tifel ta’ Żakkarija u ta’ Eliżabetta bħala l-protagonist jew wieħed mill-protagonisti. Illum qed niċċelebraw it-twelid tiegħu imma l-ewwel darba li niltaqgħu miegħu, għadu tarbija fil-ġuf, fil-festa tal-Viżitazzjoni, meta Marija maret iżżur il-qariba tagħha Eliżabetta. It-tarbija li kellha Eliżabetta fil-ġuf, li llum niċċelebraw it-twelid tagħha, qabżet bil-ferħ malli semgħet il-vuċi ta’ Marija ssellem lil Eliżabetta, xi ħaġa li Eliżabetta stess tgħid: “Malli smajt it-tislima tiegħek, it-tarbija li għandi fil-ġuf qabżet bil-ferħ” (Lq 1:44)… Read more »

The sad fate of unwanted human beings – Bishop Galea-Curmi

Message by Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi

Over 380 so-called “normal” human embryos have been cryopreserved since the embryo freezing law came into effect in 2018. The fate of these embryos is still uncertain. The recently proposed Bill to introduce pre-implantation genetic testing for monogenic diseases (PGTM) involves the testing of early embryos to detect particular genetic diseases. Embryos found to carry these genetic variants are to be frozen indefinitely… Read more »
