Pope Leo XIV has appointed Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod and Bishop Emeritus of Gozo, as a member of the Dicastery for the Clergy.

This latest Vatican post sees the Maltese Cardinal join the body responsible for the formation, ministry, and life of priests and deacons throughout the Catholic Church. The Dicastery handles matters pertaining to their pastoral work, discipline, and general welfare.

This appointment adds to Cardinal Grech’s considerable influence within the Roman Curia. In recent years, Pope Francis had already placed him on the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, and the Dicasteries for Bishops and for Divine Worship.

Cardinal Grech served as the Bishop of Gozo from 2005 until his resignation was accepted in 2019. He was swiftly appointed Pro-Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, a role he was confirmed in after being created a Cardinal in 2020. He is now a central figure in overseeing the ongoing Synod on Synodality.

The Diocese of Gozo has asked the faithful to continue praying for Cardinal Grech in his service to the universal Church.
