The Carmelites

  • The Carmelites arrived from Sicily in 1418 or thereabouts. Their first church and priory was in the countryside within the limits of Rabat, but in 1650 they abandoned this priory in favour of the one they built within the walls of Mdina in 1659; the original priory is again in the hands of the Carmelites and today it is being used as a centre for spiritual activities. The Valletta priory was built in 1570, and priories have been opened at St. Julian’s in 1892, Sta. Venera in 1912, at Fgura in 1945, at Fleur-de-Lys in 1948 and another priory in Santa Venera in 1980. The Maltese Carmelites have missions in Bolivia and are working also in other countries.
