The Augustinians came to Malta before 1413. Their Friary and church, built outside the walls of Mdina, having been destroyed in 1551 for fear of the Turks, were rebuilt in 1555 on a piece of land near the chapel of St. Mark on the Saqqajja, given to them by the Cathedral Chapter. The new church was built by Gerolamo Cassar, an Andrea Belli made the plans of the new Friary. Before the year 1453, the Augustinians were already at Victoria in Gozo. The building of the Valletta Priory started in 1571; after the Maltese Augustinians became a separate province of the Order in 1817, Friaries were founded at St. George’s Bay in 1928, at Paceville in 1936 and at Tarxien in 1948. For a short time, the Augustinians administered the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa and had a Friary at Pieta’, adjoining the church of Our Lady of Sorrows. In 1848, they founded a Free School at Valletta; this has been developed into the St. Augustine College at Pieta’, and lately, the primary school at Marsa.
