On Friday, 8th January 2010, Archbishop Paul Cremona OP visitied the National Statistics Offices in Valletta. During his visit the Archbishop took the opportunity to visit each section of the NSO and speak individually to the directors, managers and employees. The Archbishop celebrated Mass and during the homily took the opportunity to advice all present that the collection of data is extremely important. However, all people should be treated distinctly and not as simple numbers. The Archbishop mentioned as an example a situation in which 200,000 people were killed in a natural disaster some years ago. From a statistical point of view this is just a number, Mgr Cremona said, but to God these are 200,000 individuals whose name is inscribed on the palm of His hand. The Archbishop concluded by saying that if a person is not prepared to accept the word of God, then God cannot work through that person. The Archbishop stayed on for a reception and was given a silver plate as a memento.
