Pastoral work with youths should not only involve working for them, but working with them (Synod Document on Adolescents and Youth Nr. 54) The Diocesan Synod urges youths to take an active role in the Church, and among other initiatives, it enourages them to offer a service to society through voluntary service.
The number of youths, members of groups and Church movements, who commit themselves to offer their services on a voluntary basis during the summer months, is always on the increase. Many of these youths carry out voluntary work abroad, while others are involved in the organization of activities locally, working with children in summer schools, as well as with the elderly.
The Diocesan Youth Commission (KDZ) wishes this invaluable service to be acknowledged further, both at Church level and also by society. As part of the initiatives that are being taken in this respect, today, Monday 21st June 2010, Archbishop Paul Cremona OP will meet those youths who shall be carrying out voluntary work during summer, in order to show his appreciation for their commitment which they shall offer in the name of the Church. This meeting will take place at the University Chaplaincy, at 7pm. KDZ have entrusted the Ghaqda Volontarja Lourdes (AVL) with the preparations for this meeting, during which youths will be presented with a small souvenir which they can carry with them during the duration of their voluntary service.
