On Saturday 9th January, 2010, Archbishop Paul Cremona OP celebrated Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral, for couples who got married during 2009. The Archbishop spoke about the role of marriage in society. He emphasized that it is the religion we profess that has kept Maltese families together.
The Archbishop started his homily by thanking all those couples present since their presence, he said, encouraged him, the Church in Malta and our country. The Archbishop said that he wants to inspire within these couples the same courage they are inspiring in him, by encouraging them and telling them that Christ’s presence in their marriage will lead them to a beautiful future. Mgr Cremona said that “public opinion projects a harsh reality, were familiar problems are the order of the day. This vision could lead to couples giving up on marriage. However, the courage and hope which comes from our religion will strengthen the bonds between families.” In the light of the increasing marriage breakdowns, the Archbishop stated that the reasons for such an increase have come about through economic and social reasons. Nevertheless, he said, the majority of Maltese families are still strong and the main reason behind this was that they are living the sacrament of marriage.
The Archbishop concluded by saying that the values that emerge from the sacrament of marriage will lead to the couples building a strong and lasting family.
