Following the passing of Monsignor Victor Grech, tributes have poured in, with many describing him as a holy man who was always there for everyone.
Newsbook Malta visited the parish of Tal-Ibraġ, where Monsignor Grech served for many years, speaking to parishioners who shared their cherished memories of him. In their words, he was truly “a living saint.”
Many recalled how he helped them return to the Church, even in their darkest moments. His defining qualities—simplicity, humility, unconditional love, and kindness—were evident to all who knew him.
‘Thanks to Monsignor Grech, our son had a peaceful and saintly death’
A couple shared how Monsignor Grech transformed their son’s life overnight as he battled cancer, guiding him towards God in his final days. They described how, because of Monsignor Grech, their son passed away in peace, strengthened by faith.
Many who considered him a spiritual director spoke of his unique ability to captivate and inspire. Though his sermons were short, his words left a lasting impact, drawing people closer to God.
His success in engaging young people was also evident, with his spiritual exercises attracting thousands. Monsignor Charles Cordina reflected on this legacy during his appearance on What’s On Newsbook, aired on RTK103 just hours after Monsignor Grech’s passing.
‘He was the father I never had’
For many who struggled with drug addiction, Monsignor Grech was more than a priest—he was a father figure, offering mercy, support, and unwavering kindness. One parishioner movingly described him as “the physical father I never had.”
Despite his profound spiritual commitment, Monsignor Grech was also remembered for his warmth and humanity. Parishioners fondly recalled how he always encouraged them to smile and how, on his birthday, he delighted in a simple cake with raisins.
A deep love for Jesus in the Eucharist
Fr. Osmar Baldacchino, a young priest who worked closely with Monsignor Grech in recent years, noted his devotion to confession, visiting people in their homes and even in hospital.
Even in his final days, his thoughts were not of himself. When Fr. Osmar asked how he could assist him, Monsignor Grech simply replied, “Love Jesus”—a testament to his enduring faith and love for Christ.
Despite his deteriorating health, Monsignor Grech remained engaged with societal issues, reading newspapers daily to stay informed. Fr. Osmar confirmed that he was troubled by certain cultural shifts, particularly the normalisation of drug use, yet held firm to his belief in people’s capacity for change and redemption.
One individual, recently completing a rehabilitation programme, expressed a deep desire to remain close to Monsignor Grech until the very end. His final words to him were, “I love you. The Lord is waiting for me.”
‘Respected across the world’ – Fr. Brian Gialanze
Parish Priest of Ibraġ, Fr. Brian Gialanze, reflected on the profound courage and social commitment Monsignor Grech embodied. He recalled listening to his radio programme, Kelma ta’ Kuraġġ, every Saturday as a child.
During a visit to Jerusalem, Fr. Gialanze also discovered the high regard in which Monsignor Grech was held internationally, particularly by Caritas, where his work had made a lasting impact.
