Card. Sean Brady, president of the Irish Bishops’ Conference, and Mgr. Diarmuid Martin, archbishop of Dublin, will be in Rome next 11 December to meet Benedict XVI. The purpose of the meeting is to “share information and evaluations about the painful situation of the Church in Ireland following the recent publication of the ‘Murphy Commission Report’”.

The news was released by the Director of the Holy See Press Office Father Federico Lombardi. “I can confirm – said the Vatican’s spokesman – that the Holy Father has invited Cardinal Sean Brady, president of the Episcopal Conference of Ireland, and the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, for a meeting in Rome, next Friday, Dec. 11, in order to share information and evaluations about the painful situation of the Church in Ireland following the recent publication of the ‘Murphy Commission Report’”.

The responsible officials of the dicasteries of the Roman Curia with competence in the area will also participate in the meeting, as well as the Apostolic Nuncio in Ireland.

The Murphy Report on child sexual abuse in the archdiocese of Dublin was recently published on the website of Ireland’s Department of Justice (www.justice.ie). It focuses on how the Catholic Church hierarchy and State authorities have responded to the accusations of child abuse for the acts committed by 46 priests between 1975 and 2004.
