On Wednesday 13th November 2024, hundreds of catechists of the Archdiocese of Malta, from various parishes and communities around Malta came together for the annual meeting inside the Auditorium of the Society of Christian Doctrine (M.U.S.E.U.M.), at Blata l-Bajda.

The meeting began with an introduction by Rev. Dr. David Torpiano, the Archbishop’s Delegate for Catechesis. An inspiring reflection, centred on the theme: “Giving the reason for the hope that is in us” (1 Peter 3:8-17), was delivered by Mgr. George Frendo, O.P., Archbishop Emeritus of Tirana-Durres (Albania). The topic was chosen in anticipation of the Church’s upcoming Jubilee of Hope.

During his address, Mgr. Frendo shared a reflection on the nature of true Christian hope, highlighting how it stands apart from simple optimism. He explained that real hope calls the Church to face the realities of life—its challenges and sufferings—while viewing them through the lens of today’s crises. This means staying attuned to the “signs of the times” and placing unwavering trust in God’s plan. He urged catechists to live out this hope, becoming examples and messengers of it within their communities. Above all, he reminded everyone that the foundation of Christian hope is the Lord’s triumph over death—a victory that reassures and strengthens every disciple.

Mgr. Frendo concluded his reflection with a heartfelt message of encouragement for the catechists, urging them to remain steadfast in their mission. He imparted his blessing to all attendees, invoking strength and grace for their ministry in the current catechetical year.
