The Gospel of the day: 24th December

Readings of the day

First Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-5,8b-12,14a,16
Psalm: 88 (89):2-3,4-5,27 & 29

Gospel: Luke 1:67-79

In those days, Zechariah, John’s father, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant, the oath which he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”  Read more »

The Pope at Angelus: May all children of the world live in peace

Fourth Sunday of Advent

  St Peter's Square, the Vatican

Message of Pope Leo XIV

Dear brothers and sisters, good afternoon!

Today, on the fourth Sunday of Advent, the liturgy invites us to meditate on the figure of Saint Joseph. In particular, we see him at the moment when God reveals his mission in a dream (cf. Mt 1:18-24). Thus, a very beautiful episode of salvation history is presented, in which the protagonist, like us, is a fragile and fallible man, yet at the same time is courageous and strong in faith… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 23rd December

Readings of the day

First Reading: Malachi 3:1-4,23-24
Psalm: 24 (25):4bc-5ab,8-9,10 & 14

Gospel: Luke 1:57-66

In those days, the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, “No; he is to be called John.” They said to her, “None of your relatives has this name.”

Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. Fear came over all their neighbours, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, “What then will this child become?” For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him… Read more »

Christmas: presence is the greatest gift – The Archbishop

Photo: Archdiocese of Malta: Ian Noel Pace

Message by Archbishop Charles Jude Scicluna

This Christmas, perhaps the most meaningful gift we can offer one another is not something wrapped, posted, or uploaded – but time, attention, compassion, and presence, says Archbishop Charles Scicluna.

At Christmas, Christians celebrate the birth of a child. But this is no ordinary birth. The Nativity proclaims a startling truth: God chose not to send a message, a signal, or an abstract idea… Read more »

Isem ieħor li jingħata lil Ġesú skont il-Vanġelu ta’ San Mattew huwa proprju Għemmanu-el, Alla magħna. Is-suġġeriment tiegħi għal dan il-Milied huwa li aħna nkunu qrib xulxin,  preżenti għal xulxin… Read more »
