“It is a contradiction to invoke the right to choose to end one’s own life” – Archbishop Scicluna

He explains that we should not be greedy for suffering and always see what medicine has to offer

“Kontradittorja jekk f’isem id-dritt li niddeċiedi jiena nagħżel li noqtol lili nnifsi”. Hekk stqarr l-Arċisqof Charles Scicluna meta b’kompassjoni kbira kien qed iwieġeb id-domandi li sarulu mis-semmiegħa waqt il-programm Għal Kulħadd fuq RTK103. Din l-intervista mmexxija mill-preżentatriċi Christine Delicata saret fid-dawl tal-konsultazzjoni pubblika dwar is-suwiċidju assistit, li nieda l-Gvern, u li se tagħlaq fil-jiem li ġejjin.

Hu qal li dan il-punt ireġi rrespettivament mill-argumenti reliġjużi għax din hija kwistjoni ta’ dinjità, li wieħed ikun imwieżen sal-aħħar, biex bl-akkumpanjament u l-mediċina li tnaqqas l-uġigħ, jasal jaffaċċja l-mewt naturali minflok offrut il-mewt, biss għad hemm ħafna nuqqasijiet fil-kura paljattiva… Read more »

Malta’s palliative care gaps leave many patients without access to pain relief

Medical formulary restricts morphine access to limited conditions despite European guidelines recommending broader use

Patients with numerous incurable diseases in Malta are being denied access to essential palliative care medications, including morphine for pain relief, due to restrictive prescribing guidelines that medical professionals say need urgent updating.

The country’s most recent Outpatient Formulary List, published in May, permits doctors to prescribe morphine—either by injection or tablet—only to patients with Motor Neuron Disease (such as ALS), spinal cord pathologies including spina bifida, trigeminal neuralgia, and malignant diseases including various forms of cancer… Read more »

Archbishop urges Vision Malta 2050 to tackle workers’ struggles and affordable housing crisis

Ritratt: L-Arċidjoċesi ta’ Malta – Ian Noel Pace

L‑Arċisqof Charles Scicluna tkellem dwar il‑bżonn li l‑Viżjoni 2050 tal‑Gvern għandha tindirizza b’urġenza d‑drittijiet ta’ ħafna ħaddiema f’Malta li mhux qed ilaħħqu mal‑ħajja sal‑aħħar tax‑xahar kif ukoll il‑problema ta’ housing affordabbli.

Huwa qal dan waqt laqgħa mal‑Ministru għall‑Ekonomija, Intrapriża u Proġetti Strateġiċi Silvio Schembri li ppreżenta d‑dokument ta’ konsultazzjoni dwar il‑Viżjoni Malta 2050.

L‑Arċisqof laqa’ l‑enfasi li l‑Viżjoni 2050 qed tagħmel fuq il‑kwalità tal‑ħajja, u saħaq li sabiex jintlaħaq dan il‑għan hemm bżonn ta’ miżuri soċjali konkreti… Read more »

Assisted suicide and euthanasia undermine society’s moral foundations, says id-Dar tal-Providenza

Id-Dar tal-Providenza is firmly opposed to assisted suicide and euthanasia, as it believes they both strike at the heart of society, which has a duty to protect the life of every person. They also undermine the principle of inclusion. It also maintains that the dignity of life is not achieved through assisted suicide. For these reasons, it strongly opposes the proposal to introduce assisted voluntary euthanasia in Malta… Read more »

In an exclusive interview with Newsbook Malta, a Professor of palliative care and member of the House of Lords says that palliative care in Malta is still in its infancy.

A professor of palliative care and member of the House of Lords has claimed that while palliative care in Malta shows considerable promise, it remains in its early stages.

In an exclusive interview with Newsbook Malta at the Palace of Westminster in London, Professor Ilora Finlay expressed concern at the limited number of professionals in Malta specialising in palliative care. According to her, the number is so low that they could be counted on one hand… Read more »

70% of Malta’s residents prefer palliative care to euthanasia

47% would consider assisted suicide if they felt they were a burden on their loved ones

A new misco survey has found that 70% of Malta’s residents prefer palliative care that ensures a natural, pain-free death over the option of assisted suicide.

The survey, conducted between 10 and 19 June among 500 respondents, comes as the government’s public consultation on assisted voluntary euthanasia enters its final week.

The White Paper under consultation proposes allowing terminally ill patients with less than six months to live access to lethal medication to end their lives voluntarily… Read more »
