Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 John :11-18
Psalm: 71 (72):2,10-11,12-13

Gospel: Mark 6:45-52

After the five thousand men had eaten, immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After saying farewell to them, he went up on the mountain to pray.

When evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. When he saw that they were straining at the oars against an adverse wind, he came towards them early in the morning, walking on the sea… Read more »

Get-together for SDC Candidates

The SDC candidates, together with their curators, gathered at St Michael School on Saturday, 4 January 2025, for their annual get-together held at the beginning of each year. The candidates took the initiative to organise this event themselves.

In the school chapel, they reflected on the boundless love God has for humanity, a love that they are called to mirror in love towards themselves, and ultimately, in acts of love towards others… Read more »

A light that gives hope – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Warrab lejn il-Galilija” (Mt 4:12). Dan hu l-kliem li naqraw fl-Evanġelju skont San Mattew fuq Ġesù llum, u għamel hekk wara li arrestaw lil Ġwanni l-Battista. Ġesù ma għamilx hekk għax beża’. Imkien ma narawh jaħrab minħabba l-biża’. Imma Ġesù għamel hekk biex ikun jista’ jaqdi l-ministeru tiegħu f’post ieħor, u speċjalment fil-Galilija li kienet reġun meqjus kulturalment u spiritwalment emarġinat, ma’ nies li lilhom ukoll ried iwassal l-Aħbar it-Tajba… Read more »

A walk of hope – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Fil-knisja parrokkjali ta’ Ħal Balzan għandna pittura tal-ġrajja tal-Epifanija – iż-żjara tal-maġi lil Ġesù – hemm fuq fejn l-orgni, in-naħa ta’ wara tal-knisja. Interessanti li f’din il-pittura hemm, fil-fatt, erba’ maġi mhux tlieta, kif tradizzjonalment naraw lill-maġi. Nafu li l-Evanġelju skont San Mattew ma jgħidilniex li kienu tlieta, imma jsemmi t-tliet rigali li offrew – deheb, inċens u mirra – u għalhekk it-tradizzjoni hi li kull wieħed ġarr rigal minnhom… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 7th January

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 John 4:7-10
Psalm: 71 (72):2,3-4ab,7-8

Gospel: Mark 6:34-44

In those days, as Jesus went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves have you? … Read more »

Pope at Angelus: The Epiphany calls us to seek Jesus, not to remain indifferent

  Saint Peter's Square, Vatican City

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Feast of the Epiphany!

Today the Church celebrates the manifestation of Jesus, and the Gospel concentrates on the Magi, who at the end of a long journey reach Jerusalem to adore Jesus.

If we look closely, we will discover something a bit stranger: while these wise men from far away come to find Jesus, those who were close by do not take one step towards the grotto in Bethlehem… Read more »

Pope at Epiphany Mass: Star calls all to seek Christ in pilgrimage

Pope Francis presides at Mass on the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, and recalls that the star which points to Jesus is visible to everyone, inviting us to seek Him in all things.

“The star speaks to us of God’s dream that men and women everywhere, in all their rich variety, will together form one family that can live harmoniously in prosperity and peace.”

Pope Francis offered that reminder on Monday as he presided at Mass in St… Read more »

The Minor Basilica of the Assumption of Mary, Mosta

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Għeżież tfal, l-ewwel nett grazzi ħafna talli ġejtu llum fil-Bażilika tal-Mosta biex flimkien nagħmlu din il-mixja sabiħa, f’din is-sena speċjali. Din is-sena hi speċjali għax il-Papa Franġisku jixtieq li din is-sena fiha nagħmlu festa kbira ta’ ħniena. Tgħidli xi tfisser?

L-ewwel nett nitgħallem naħfer; jekk ikun hemm xi ħadd idejjaqni nieħu paċenzja; jekk ikun hemm xi ħadd jagħmilli l-ħsara, ninsa malajr u nkompli bil-ħajja tiegħi… Read more »

Pope at Angelus: Imitate the God of love, be messengers of hope

  Saint Peter's Square, Vatican City

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday!
And well done, you are brave, with the rain! Happy Sunday!

Today the Gospel (cf. Jn 1:1-18), talking to us about Jesus, Word incarnate, tells us that “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (Jn 1:5). It reminds us, then, how powerful is God’s love, which is not overcome by anything and which, despite obstacles and rejections, continues to shine and illuminate our path… Read more »
