The Gospel of the day: 28th October

Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles – Feast
Readings of the day

First Reading: Ephesians 2:19-22
Psalm: 18:2-5

Gospel: Luke 6:12-19

In those days, Jesus went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them.  Read more »

Timely judgement – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Għala ma tiġġudikawx intom stess x’inhu s-sewwa?” (Lq 12:57) Dan hu li jgħid Ġesù llum lin-nies. Nafu li kien qed jgħidilhom kif in-nies kienu kapaċi jaraw is-sinjali tat-temp, u jgħidu li ġejja x-xita jew ġejja s-sħana, imma ma kinux kapaċi jaqraw is-sinjali taż-żmien (ara Lq 12:56). Hu hawnhekk li Ġesù jgħidilhom: “Għala ma tiġġudikawx intom stess x’inhu s-sewwa?”

Issa jista’ jkun jgħaddilna minn moħħna: hawn qed jgħidilhom lin-nies li għandhom jiġġudikaw, imma Ġesù ma kienx qal lin-nies “tiġġudikawx, biex ma tkunux iġġudikati” (Mt 7:1)? … Read more »

He sets us free – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Int meħlusa” (Lq 13:12). Din il-kelma li jgħid Ġesù llum fl-Evanġelju tagħtina t-tifsira ta’ din il-ġrajja sabiħa rrakkuntata fl-Evanġelju skont San Luqa, ta’ meta Ġesù kien fis-sinagoga. Ħa nħarsu ftit lejn din ix-xena u naraw dak li turina u li tgħallimna għall-ħajja tagħna.

Hawn Ġesù kien qed jgħallem. Imma, f’mument minnhom, għajnejh waqgħu fuq waħda mara li kienet “milwija ħafna” (Lq 13:11), u li kienet tidher li kellha bżonn l-għajnuna… Read more »

Pope: Let us build a humbler, more welcoming Church

Mass for the Jubilee of the Synodal Teams and Participatory Bodies

  St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican

Homily by Pope Leo XIV

Brothers and Sisters,

As we celebrate the Jubilee of the Synodal Teams and Participatory Bodies, we are invited to contemplate and rediscover the mystery of the Church. She is not merely a religious institution, nor is she simply identified with hierarchies and structures. The Second Vatican Council reminds us that the Church is the visible sign of the union between God and humanity, where God intends to bring us all together into one family of brothers and sisters and make us his people: a people made up of beloved children, all united in the one embrace of his love… Read more »

The Pope at Jubilee Audience: Hope is a journey for all humanity

Jubilee Audience

  St Peter's Square, the Vatican

Catechesis 7. To hope is not to know. Nicola Cusano

“You have reached the goal of your pilgrimage,” Pope Leo told pilgrims at Saturday’s Jubilee Audience, “but now, like the disciples of Jesus, we must learn to dwell in a new world.”

The Holy Father reminded them that “The Jubilee has made us pilgrims of hope precisely for this reason: everything must now be seen in the light of the Crucified One… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 27th October

Readings of the day

First Reading: Romans 8:12-17
Psalm: 67 (68):2 & 4,6-7ab,20-21

Gospel: Luke 13:10-17

Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight.

When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.” When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.”

But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites! … Read more »

Working to take care of each other as a living temple – The Archbishop

Mass on the anniversary of the consecration of Ħaż-Żabbar Parish Church

The Shrine of Our Lady of Graces, Ħaż-Żabbar

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Ġesu juża din l-espressjoni qawwija ħafna meta lil Pietru jikkonfermah fil-fidi li għadu kemm stqarr (ara Mt16: 18-19). Ħa nibdew minn dak li jgħid Pietru: “Inti l-Messija bin Alla l-ħaj” (Mt 16:16). X’qiegħed jgħid Pietru? “Inti dak li konna qed nistennew għal sekli sħaħ; inti risposta għax-xewqat u x-xenqat tagħna. Mhux biss! Imma għax inti “bin Alla l-ħaj” (Mt 16:16) – Alla tal-ħajjin mhux Alla tal-mejtin… Read more »
