The Gospel of the day: 2nd January

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 John 2:22-28
Psalm: 97 (98):1,2-3ab,3cd-4

Gospel: John 1:19-28

This is the testimony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to him to ask him, “Who are you?” he admitted and did not deny it, but admitted, “I am not the Messiah.” So they asked him, “What are you then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? … Read more »

The Pope: May 2025 be a year of true peace that goes beyond quibbling over the details of agreements and human compromises

Message of Pope Francis for the 58th World Day of Peace

Forgive us our trespasses: grant us your peace

I. Listening to the plea of an endangered humanity

1. At the dawn of this New Year given to us by our heavenly Father, a year of Jubilee in the spirit of hope, I offer heartfelt good wishes of peace to every man and woman. I think especially of those who feel downtrodden, burdened by their past mistakes, oppressed by the judgment of others and incapable of perceiving even a glimmer of hope for their own lives… Read more »

The Lord’s protection is what truly preserves us from harm – The Archbishop on New Year’s Day

Holy Mass on the Solemnity of Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and World Day of Peace

The Chapel of Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Aħna u nibdew sena ġdida, nisimgħu l-barka sabiħa fuq il-poplu ta’ Alla: “Ibierkek il-Mulej, u jħarsek! Jixħet il-Mulej id-dija ta’ wiċċu fuqek, u jurik il-ħniena! Iħares lejk il-Mulej bi mħabba, u jagħtik is-sliem!” (Num 6:24-26).

Dawn huma tliet valuri sbieħ li nixtieq noffri u nawgura lill-poplu għażiż tagħna, minn dan il-post qaddis u għażiż, mid-Dar tal-Providenza, aħna u nibdew sena ġdida, nibdew ukoll il-maratorna ta’ solidarjetà b’risq din in-netwerk ta’ djar, fejn il-persuni ħutna jkunu jistgħu jgħixu kemm jista’ jkun b’awtonomija u jkollhom il-kura meħtieġa… Read more »

Listen and reflect: The Archbishop’s guidance for the year’s end

End of year Thanksgiving Mass

  St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Aħna u nisimgħu l-Evanġelju tal-lum skont San Luqa, ninnutaw diversi atteġġjamenti li nixtieq nipproponi fit-tmiem ta’ din is-sena u fil-bidu tas-sena tal-Ġublew, li inawgurajnieh il-Ħadd li għadda 29 ta’ Diċembru, u jkompli sas-6 ta’ Jannar 2026.

Ir-ragħajja semgħu messaġġ u marru jgħaġġlu sabiex jiltaqgħu mal-Mulej. Ma semgħux biss il-messaġġ imma laqgħuh. B’għaġla, bdew proċess u ltaqgħu mal-Mulej, fejn “sabu lil Marija u lil Ġuzeppi, bit-tarbija mimduda f’maxtura” (Lq 2:16)… Read more »

Mary, Mother of God – Solemnity
Readings of the day

First Reading: Numbers 6:22-27
Psalm: 66 (67):2-3,5,6,8
Second Reading: Galatians 4:4-7

Gospel: Luke 2:16-21

In those days, the shephrds went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.  Read more »
