Christmas message by Archbishop Charles Jude Scicluna

Greetings and best wishes for a joyous Christmas to everyone following and listening to this message. This year, I have chosen to deliver my Christmas reflections from this dear location, Hospice Malta, traditionally known as the Cini Institute in Santa Venera. What is the historical significance of this place to the Maltese and Gozitans?

Cini Institute began as a food production facility owned by the Cini family, who operated a pasta factory here… Read more »

Popes and Jubilees: The opening of the Holy Door in history

Starting from the Holy Year of 1900, we retrace some key moments of the ceremonies for the opening of the Holy Door.

One of the symbolic images of every Jubilee is that of the Pontiff crossing the threshold of the Holy Door. This is a moment deeply rooted in the Middle Ages. The first pilgrim to cross the threshold is always the Bishop of Rome… Read more »

Mother of faith, hope, love – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Ara, int se tnissel fil-ġuf u jkollok iben u ssemih Ġesù” (Lq 1:31) Dan hu l-kliem tal-anġlu Gabriel lil Marija, fis-silta li għadna kif smajna mill-Evanġelju skont San Luqa. Hija l-ġrajja meta l-anġlu jidher lil Marija u jagħmlilha l-istedina biex hi ssir omm Alla. Din narawha proprju ftit ġranet qabel ma niċċelebraw it-twelid ta’ Ġesù. Hu interessanti, fil-fatt, li ftit ġranet qabel it-twelid aħna qed naraw il-ġrajja tat-tnissil… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 24th December

Readings of the day

First Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-5,8b-12,14a,16
Psalm: 88 (89):2-3,4-5,27 & 29

Gospel: Luke 1:67-79

In those days, Zechariah, John’s father, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant, the oath which he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”  Read more »
