Pope to Mideast nuns: pray for peace, persecuted

  • Saying he was giving them a “mission,”  Pope Francis has asked religious sisters from Bethlehem and the Middle East to pray for peace in the region and for two new Palestinian saints. 19th century Sister Miriam of Jesus Crucified Baouardy and Sister Marie-Alphonsine Ghattas were canonized in a big outdoor Mass presided by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s square on Sunday. Many of the Carmelite and Rosary sisters who had attended the canonization had flown into Rome from Jordan – on the same plane as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who was also present as the two Palestinian religious were made saints.   In receiving the visiting nuns in the Clementine Hall in the Apostolic Palace Monday, Pope Francis said the president had told him the flight was “full of sisters!”  “Poor pilot,” the Pope chuckled…

Democratic Dialogue

  • On the occasion of World Day of Social Communications, Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna met news editors and made an appeal in favour of democratic dialogue; so that Malta may be a country where people can express their opinions without being criticized in a destructive manner.  Responsible freedom of expression should not lead to character assassination.  When this happens, we are missing the opportunity to engage in dialogue which leads us to further the common good together.  In a digital age, we all have the potential to contribute, with our words and comments, to a democratic dialogue which strengthens rather than destroys…

Pope: Christians must be witnesses to Jesus’ Resurrection

  • Pope Francis canonized four women religious on Sunday, all 19th century nuns who worked in education. KSMR’s appeal against the development of a shooting range near Mount St Joseph

    • The Conference of Religious Major Superiors (Malta) (KSMR), representing all twenty-nine Religious Orders in Malta and Gozo, expressly supports the Jesuits in their appeal against the construction of a shooting range complex next door to Mount St Joseph Retreat House in Mosta.

      The KSMR supports Jesuits’ appeal primarily because it believes this is a just cause.
