Pope Benedict XVI urged Croatia to honor and protect its Christian heritage as it approaches full membership in the European Union. The pope said Croatians could count on the church to support their efforts for political, economic and religious renewal 20 years after declaring independence from the former communist Yugoslavia. VATICAN AIDE RECALLS SHIPWRECKED AFRICAN MIGRANTS

A Vatican spokesman is remembering in prayer the hundreds of people who died in recent weeks in the Mediterranean Sea while fleeing conflicts in North Africa.

Since the unrest and conflict began in various countries of North Africa in February, close to 22,000 migrants, the majority Tunisians, have arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa, reported the Italian interior ministry.

VATICAN COMMISSION TO DISCUSS CHALLENGES IN CHINA

The commission that Benedict XVI established in 2007 to study the major issues regarding the Church in China will meet this week in the Vatican.

The Vatican press office announced Saturday that the commission will hold a three-day meeting, beginning Monday.

The communiqué explained that the commission is constituted by “the heads of the dicasteries of the Roman Curia with competence in this area and by representatives of the Chinese episcopate and religious congregations.”
