The Mission Fund was set up on 16th April, 1984 by Ian and Rita Azzopardi of Mosta with the aim of fostering the missionary spirit in the Maltese Islands and helping missionaries in Third World Countries which today number around 250. This is a voluntary organization, run by lay people who are trying to put in practice God’s message of love.

The fund-raising activities, which are held throughout the year, are: bazaars, tea tombolas, social activities, lotteries and sale of used stamps and telecards. Besides, the Fund organizes spiritual and social activities for its members such as retreats, Masses and outings.

Each year, the Fund organizes hands-on missionary experiences in Third World Countries such as Algiers, Kenya, Tunisia, Guatemala , Peru’ and Tanzania. These are open for members and non-members of the Mission Fund. During these experiences, the volunteers live a community life, give Christian witness through dedication to their work and acquire first-hand experience of the harsh realities and poverty of people in Third World Countries.

The Fund distributes a quarterly newsletter “Il-Missjunarju” to around 4000 benefactors, and a special edition of the magazine “Il-Misjunarju” yearly. The latter contains articles and experiences of the missionaries themselves.

Since its inception in 1984 the Mission Fund has donated more than € 2,200,000 to Maltese and Gozitan missionaries in Third World countries.
