The Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Malta made a step forward in May 1975 after a talk by the Australian Mr. Brian Smith at the Catholic Institute.
This experience of newness and freshness brought about by Spirit-filled prayers, spread around like wild fire and within a few months most parishes had their own prayer group. Today there are about 70 groups or communities that meet regularly in different parishes around Malta, although these do not necessarily belong within the pastoral dimension of the particular parish.
It is not easy to explain or contain in writing the nature of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, primarily because its basic strongest characteristic is freedom in the Spirit. Notwithstanding this, the Komunjoni Tiġdid Kariżmatiku compiled a statute which regulates the nature and duties of the two main bodies of leadership: the National Service Committee and the Assembly of Leaders. The statute does not hinder or diminish in any way any group’s or community’s individuality or charisma, on the other hand, it is intended to strengthen the particular calling of the Charismatic Renewal within the Catholic Church.
The aim of the Charismatic Renewal is personal renewal through the knowledge of Christ as supreme Lord of life, whose mission is to reconcile us to the Father by enkindling in us His Holy Spirit. Therefore, Charismatic Renewal emphasizes: “The Baptism in the Holy Spirit”, that is a renewing experience of what actually takes place in us through the sacraments of initiation.
This aim is attained through weekly prayer meetings and by occasional Life in the Spirit seminars which last eight weeks and lead to an intimate relation with the Lord: The Holy Spirit.
