The Sunday Gospel: 13th June

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings of the day

First Reading: Ezek 17, 22-24
Salm: 91(92), 2-3,13-14,15-16
Second Reading: 2 Cor 5, 6-10

Gospel: Mk 4, 26-34

In those days, Jesus said to the crowd: “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.”

He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.  Read more »

A heart full of love – Bishop Galea-Curmi

Mass on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Ħal Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Il-qalb hi dik li minnha naraw il-persuna x’tip hi jew fiex tinsab. Meta ġieli tisma’ fuq xi ħadd ‘qalbu sewda’, mhux għall-kulur iswed tal-qalb ikunu qed jgħidu, imma li bniedem dispjaċut; u meta ngħidu ‘qalbu tajba’, mhux għax il-qalb taħdem tajjeb ikunu qed jgħidu, imma għax hu bniedem kollu kemm hu ġeneruż.

Għalhekk, il-festa tal-lum tal-qalb ta’ Ġesù tistedinna nagħrfu min hu Ġesù għalina… Read more »

Don’t be discouraged by small beginnings – The Archbishop

Mass on the first Saturday of the nativity of Mary

The Basilica of the nativity of Mary, Senglea

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Ġesù jagħtina żewġ tixbihat illum, meħuda mid-dinja tal-ħxejjex u mill-biedja. Kien jinnota ħafna l-kampanja ta’ żmienu, u fl-Evanġelju nsibu riferiment għal diversi ħxejjex u sitwazzjonijiet li huma qrib tagħna wkoll fil-Mediterran.

Fl-ewwel tixbiha, Ġesù donnu jqabbel is-Saltna t’Alla, dan il-proċess, li permezz tiegħu aħna nersqu lejh u lejn il-ħniena tiegħu; bħala xi ħaġa li tinżera’ fil-qalb tagħna, li mbagħad trid żmienha… Read more »

The Eucharist: a present not a prize – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Ħal Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Għalkemm ġieli nħawduhom, hemm differenza bejn premju u rigal. Premju jagħtuhulek għal xi ħaġa li tkun ħdimt għaliha u li ksibt, pereżempju għax tmur tajjeb ħafna f’eżami. Premju jagħtuhulek għax ikun ħaqqek, għax tkun stinkajt, għax ikun mertu tiegħek.

Rigal mhux hekk. Rigal – fis-sens proprju tal-kelma, għax kultant qlibna s-sens proprju tal-kliem – jagħtihulek xi ħadd bil-qalb, bi mħabba… Read more »

On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, his disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, “The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready… Read more »

Questions to make us think – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Lil Ġesù nafuh jgħallem, u f’diversi drabi kien hemm min għamillu mistoqsija, jew aktar minn waħda. Xi wħud staqsewh biex ikunu jafu iktar jew ikollhom l-affarijiet aktar ċari, kif għamlu d-dixxipli tiegħu; oħrajn, bħal xi Fariżej, biex jonsbuh jew biex jaqilgħu xi polemika. Imma mbagħad hemm drabi oħra fejn hu Ġesù li jagħmel mistoqsija jew aktar minn waħda; u jagħmilha mhux għax ma kienx jaf ir-risposta, imma aktar biex jgħin lin-nies jaħsbu u jwassal għall-punt li jixtieq jagħmel… Read more »

A person in the womb – Bishop Galea-Curmi

Mass on the feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

F’diversi ġrajjiet fl-Evanġelju tolqotna kif Marija hi dejjem fis-skiet u fil-kwiet. Meta dehrilha l-anġlu Gabrijel, u hi aċċettat li ssir omm Alla, hemm ċerta serenità li toħroġ mir-rakkont; anke meta naraw lil Marija taħt is-salib. L-Evanġelju jgħid li hi kienet “tgħożż f’qalbha” dak li qed tgħix. Hemm ċertu kwiet, skiet.

Lil Marija nsibuha differenti fir-rakkont tal-lum fejn narawha mgħaġġla… Read more »
