Promoting the common good and the situation in Malta

  • The day after Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna appealed for a fair distribution of wealth and asked whether the wealth being generated in our society is causing economic disparity, statistics published by the National Statistics Office showed that the gap between the rich and the poor is actually growing.

The Archbishop’s call on Independence Day, for authorities to pay more attention to the weaker members of our society, is even more urgent when one considers that the number of people at risk of poverty in 2016 stood at 69,920, according to the NSO…

Standing up to fear

  •

We have all been shaken by the barbaric killing of Daphne Caruana Galizia. We forcefully condemn the murder of a human being, whoever it might be or whatever one thinks of him or her. Ms Caruana Galizia’s murder is a defeat for our country.

At this critical moment we must also show solidarity with all our journalists, and we entreat them not to be slaves of their pay masters but servants of liberty and truth…

Rebirth through forgiveness, unity and diversity

  • During his homily on Pentecost Sunday, Pope Francis stated that the Catholic Church is facing two “recurrent temptations”. The first “seeks diversity without unity,” while the second “seeks unity without diversity.”

He reminded us that these temptations go against the Spirit of the Risen Jesus, that on the day of Pentecost, the Spirit gathered the disciples into unity by giving a different gift to each one of them and began to speak in other languages” (see Acts 2:3-4)…

Peace on Earth to People of Goodwill

  • In his message during the ‘Milied Flimkien’ campaign, Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna said that “we must do our outmost to avoid words of hate towards each other”. Many a time, our words are in stark contrast with the words that the angels announced – “peace on earth to people of goodwill” (Lk 2,14). The Archbishop also said that we must consider our words carefully and must exercise this self-control throughout the year…

Enlarge the Horizons of Our Hearts

  • At the beginning of Advent, Pope Francis encourages us to reflect on the contrast between our daily routine and the unexpected coming of the Lord. The Gospel, the Pope said, is not trying to frighten us, but “to enlarge the horizons of our hearts” to further dimensions, giving meaning even to everyday occurrences.

This perspective is also an invitation to “sobriety, to not be dominated by the things of this world” but rather to keep them in their proper place…
