The saints next door

  • Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna said that although our culture teaches us that only those who died for Christ are saints, in his latest exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate (Rejoice and Be Glad), Pope Francis has managed to bring down holiness from its pedestal. In the five chapters of the exhortation, the Pope explains how in today’s world, holiness can be achieved in the family, in the workplace and in consecrated life, and other places…

Truth that leads to peace

  • Emails, phone calls, text messages and social media are all competing for our attention in order to exert their influence on us. Media is constantly imparting information that at times is correct but at other times is manipulated or even fake (fake news).

In his message for World Communications Day (13.05.18), Pope Francis writes that “the most radical antidote to the virus of falsehood is purification by the truth.” For us Christians can only mean that we rely solely on the One who is true, the living God…

The Alphabet of Creation

  • The desire for children is a sacred one, and every effort made to help infertile couples embrace their own children must be praised and blessed. The dignity of this process of conception and birth demands that they are the fruit of the love between the biological father and mother of the child. When we start talking about men and women who donate their reproductive cells to third parties, we are destroying this essential union…

A new feast for the Church

  • As from this year, the Monday after Pentecost will be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of the Church, a new feast introduced by Pope Francis in the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church.

Through this celebration, the Pope wishes to remind all the disciples of Christ, that if we want to grow and be filled with the Lord’s love, our life must be anchored to the Mystery of the Cross, the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary…

Best wishes and prayers for the Archbishop

  • We thank God that Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna is recovering well following his admission to hospital in Santiago, during which he underwent surgery, whilst on a mission in Chile entrusted to him by Pope Francis.

The Church in Malta and Gozo wish to express their solidarity with Archbishop Scicluna and encourage all the faithful to continue to pray for him during his recovery, that he may recover fully to continue serving Christ and the Church with complete dedication…

Pause, see and return

  • “We are subject to numerous temptations.  Each of us knows the difficulties we have to face. Lent is the ideal time to unmask these and other temptations, to allow our hearts to beat once more in tune with the vibrant heart of Jesus.” At the beginning of his homily of Ash Wednesday, Pope Francis invites Christians to think and live these words: pause, see, and return…

Shepherds after God’s own heart

  • “The Church endures and abides when God’s holiness is spread among its members” Pope Francis says. In people like Bishop Adeodato Micallef OCD, Bishop Sylvester Carmel Magro OFM, and Bishop Emanuel Barbara OFMCap, who passed on to eternal life in January, the true beauty and greatness of the Church shines through. They were three Maltese shepherds who gave their lives to the flock put in their care…

A Church closer to youth

  • It is a well-known fact that Pope Francis wants to be closer to people and understand their needs. In preparation for the Synod on Youth to be held this October, the Pope wants bishops to understand and live the needs, desires, challenges and fears of young people in today’s world. Parish priests within the Archdiocese of Malta, together with the Archbishop, chose to dedicate their annual live-in to listen more about this important reality to the Church…
