The Friars Minor arrived in Malta in 1492 from Sicily. They opened their first Friary at Rabat in 1500. The second Friary was built in Valletta in 1575. These two Friaries were dependent on the Sicilian Province of “Val di Noto”. Between 1819 and 1838, they were governed by two Maltese Friars as Delegates of the Minister General. The Maltese Friars achieved their autonomy when, in 1838, the Maltese Custody was established under the patronage of St. John the Baptist. In 1882 a Friary was built in Sliema and another one followed in Gozo in 1889.
In 1914, the Maltese Custody was elevated to a Province dedicated to St. Paul the Apostle. Since then, other Frairies have been established: in 1947 in Hamrun, another two Frairies in Bahar ic-Caghaq, in 1958 and in 1991 respectively. In 1981 a chapel was opened in Birkirkara that later was dedicated to Bl. Nazju Falzon.
