The Gospel of the day: 25th October

  • Saint Luke 12:39-48

Jesus said to his disciples: “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

Then Peter said, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?” And the Lord replied, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so. Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property.

But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful. That servant who knew his master’s will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly…

The true mark of a great mother

  • Some encouragement for all the mothers who think they are constantly letting their children down.

When my third baby, Liam, was a week old, I left him sleeping in the middle of the couch and went to the kitchen to make lunch for my other two kids, who were quietly coloring in their bedroom. Within seconds of starting to spread peanut butter across a slice of bread, I heard a floor-shaking thunk, followed by an agonizing moment of silence…

The Gospel of the day: 24th October

  • Saint Luke 12:35-38

Jesus said to his disciples: “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.

Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.

And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants.”

“Let us not be afraid but at the same time let us look after one another” – The Archbishop, one week after the tragic death of Daphne Caruana Galizia

Mass at Bidnija Church for the repose of the soul of Daphne Caruana Galizia

  •
  • Homily by Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna

    23rd October 2017

“Xejn la tibżgħu” (Lk 12, 7), do not be afraid, non avere paura. This is the message of Jesus that I would like to convey to the Maltese people as the spiritual shepherd of Malta: “Do not be afraid”…

Standing up to fear

  • We have all been shaken by the barbaric killing of Daphne Caruana Galizia. We forcefully condemn the murder of a human being, whoever it might be or whatever one thinks of him or her. Ms Caruana Galizia’s murder is a defeat for our country.

At this critical moment we must also show solidarity with all our journalists, and we entreat them not to be slaves of their pay masters but servants of liberty and truth…

Promoting the common good and the situation in Malta

  • The day after Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna appealed for a fair distribution of wealth and asked whether the wealth being generated in our society is causing economic disparity, statistics published by the National Statistics Office showed that the gap between the rich and the poor is actually growing.

The Archbishop’s call on Independence Day, for authorities to pay more attention to the weaker members of our society, is even more urgent when one considers that the number of people at risk of poverty in 2016 stood at 69,920, according to the NSO…

Pope Francis at Angelus: On being Christian in the world

  • Pope Francis prayed the Angelus with pilgrims and tourists gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.

Addressing them ahead of the traditional prayer of Marian devotion, Pope Francis shared a reflection on the Reading from the Sunday Gospel, which this week came from St. Matthew and contains the maxim, “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and render unto God what is God’s.”

Pope Francis explained that the episode teaches us both the legitimacy of earthly authority and the primacy of God in human affairs and over all the universe…
