PRAYER REVEALS MAN’S NEED FOR GOD, SAYS POPE

Benedict XVI is urging the faithful to spend more time in prayer, which he called an expression of man’s profound need for meaning and understanding.

“Dear brothers and sisters,” the Pope appealed at the end of today’s general audience, “let us learn to spend more time before God.”

“Let us learn to recognize in silence the God who has revealed himself in Jesus Christ,” he continued, “to recognize in the depth of ourselves his voice that calls us and leads us back to the profundity of our existence, to the fount of life, to the source of salvation, to make us go beyond the limits of our life and to open ourselves to the measure of God, to the relationship with Him who is Infinite Love.”

PREFECT NAMED FOR EVANGELIZATION CONGREGATION

Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Fernando Filoni, 65, substitute for general affairs of the Secretariat of State, as prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

YOUTH DAY:100 DAYS AND COUNTING

A new Pentecost is looming just over the horizon, with only 100 days till the World Youth Day in Madrid, says the cardinal archbishop of the host city. Cardinal Antonio Rouco Varela called the faithful of his archdiocese to the final leg of preparation in a note released Sunday. The Madrid World Youth Day is scheduled for Aug 16-21.
“We have not failed to prepare ourselves and to dispose ourselves spiritually and pastorally so that Madrid’s World Youth Day with the Holy Father, accompanied by bishops and presbyters from all the dioceses of the world, will again be the providential occasion for a profound, authentic and joyful encounter with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who calls young people in his Church so that their lives, often depressed and broken, and others fresh and vigorous, will be rooted and built up in him, the only one who can offer them and give them truth, hope and love,” the cardinal said… Read more »

THE OFTEN FORGOTTEN BATTLE OF MOTHERS WHO DIE IN CHILDBIRTH

In Africa 4.5 million children under the age of 5 and 265 000 mothers die each year. Most of these deaths are related to pregnancy and childbirth and could be avoided by ensuring basic health care.
